All Shanghai 1814’s menus are designed by the Head Chef, who is from Michelin-starred Hakkasan in London’s Mayfair. The Head Chef is passionate about fusing traditional flavours with modern methods and the freshest ingredients, creating contemporary Chinese dishes that are wonderfully flavoured and artfully presented.


Signature dish: Shanghai 1814’s Peking Duck is prepared using authentic methods so that every duck is roasted to perfection.


Intense flavours and exciting ingredients are used to create memorable dishes such as roasted duck and black truffle sauce, pan-fried seabass with chilli, spring onion and soya sauce, and stir fry Mongolian beef.


The skilled and talented kitchen brigade specialise in dishes inspired by the flavours and techniques of regional cuisines; these include Beijing, Guangdong, and bold Sichuan influences.

Our story




Shanghai 1814 is an exceptional destination restaurant in an iconic listed building in the heart of Southampton. You won’t have experienced anything quite like it. This is where East meets West in a cacophony of flavour, style, colour and vibrancy. Shanghai 1814 is so-called as the owner’s ancestors opened their first restaurant in Shanghai in 1814 – the time of the Qing Dynasty, China’s final imperial dynasty. The restaurant opened three years ago in a period building built in 1900 and designed in the Neo-Baroque style, ornamented with classic Doric columns, curved pediments, arches and elaborate cupolas.


This combination of traditional European architecture with exuberant Chinese interior design is dynamic and exciting. Recently Shanghai 1814 was completely restyled and delicious new menu were introduced. The restaurant has therefore been relaunched, and guests are invited to rediscover 1814 and enjoy the ultimate dining experience.


Wow-factor interiors are decadent and glamorous, draped in dazzling chandeliers and adorned with cherry blossom. The menus feature contemporary Chinese dishes that are fresh and flavoursome, created by a Chef who previously worked at Michelin-starred Hakkasan in London’s Mayfair. The drinks menu is equally exciting with sakes, celebratory fizz and creative cocktails inspired by Chinese legends.


To meet current distancing requirements, tables are well-spaced and vintage-style screens and fretwork dividers provide diners with privacy and the reassurance that they can relax, knowing their comfort and safety has been carefully considered.


Alongside fine dining, 1814 also offers a novel and fun experience: karaoke. But this is karaoke with a twist, incorporating the very latest audio visual digital technology, stunning mood lighting with synchronised strobes and everyone’s favourite music genres.

Everyone is welcome. For Shanghai 1814 have created both an extensive Vegan Menu and Gluten Free Menu; this ensures that guests with dietary requirements are accommodated and can enjoy the same experience as the rest of the party.

Special lunch menu added during the lunch hours alongside with other menus too.


The Drinks menu features exciting East-West fusion cocktails, both easy-drinking and weighty wines chosen to complement Chinese cuisine, fabulous celebratory fizz, sakes, and an exceptional selection of spirits encompassing gin, tequila and whisky, including Japanese whisky.

Choose from a range of private dining spaces suitable for get-togethers for family and friends, special occasions and exclusive events. These include The Mezzanine Balcony with stunning views over the restaurant. On the upper floors are richly decorated private rooms with personalised service.
